Maurizio Sarri EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea boss says English referees can’t use VAR as he insists Tottenham’s Harry Kane was ‘clearly offside’ in build-up to Wembley winner
Maurizio Sarri was left perplexed at the decision to award Tottenham a penalty as Chelsea went down to a 1-0 defeatto their London rivals in their Carabao Cup semi-final tie at Wembley.Harry Kane scored the winner for Spurs from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box by Kepa Arrizabalaga following a Video Assistant Referee check.Kane dispatched what proved to be the winning goal4

However, Sarri’s grievance with the awarding of the penalty was because he felt Kane was stood in an offside position beforehand. At the time of the incident, the VAR angle suggested Kane was onside and the correct call had been made, as you can see below. But new footage of the incident from a different angle, which was more in line with Kane, actually showed his head and knee in an offside position – suggesting the penalty should not have been awarded in the first place.Speaking to talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams after the game, Sarri said: “I only saw the video from our camera and our camera was in line with Kane and he was offside with his head and his knee.”Sarri takes another look at the penalty incidentSky Sports4

VAR is currently undergoing a trial phase in the English game with the system not being used in the Premier League. And Sarri suggested the confusion it caused during the game also cost his team the result as his players were influenced by the linesman’s original decision to flag Kane offside. He added in his post-match press conference:“Maybe the camera of the VAR was in another position. From our camera it was clearly offside.”Sarri added: “From the image from our camera, Kane was offside, clearly offside. But it’s not important. I think it’s more important that the linesman stopped the run, he didn’t follow the ball.“So for the players on the pitch, it’s clearly offside. He had a big influence on our defenders.“Maybe the camera of the VAR was in another position. From our camera it was clearly offside.”Sarri and Chelsea feel hard-done by after the decision4

Sarri questioned whether English referees were able to use VAR properly.“At the moment I think that English referees are not able to use the system,” he said.“I think they have to study the system. Of course, it’s very strange that in the Premier League there isn’t and in the Carabao Cup there is the system. Strange for us, the players and I think also the referees.”Regardless of the penalty decision, Chelsea can consider themselves unlucky for not getting something out of the game. The Blues hit the post twice, first from N’Golo Kante and then from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s deflected cross. But despite their scoring woes, Sarri was content with his side’s application, saying:Yes in this moment of the season its not easy for us to score. “We have to solve this problem but I think with these kind of performances we can score a lot in the future. Its very important for us to continue in this application, determination.“We didnt score today but we were dangerous, we played a lot of balls in the opposing box.”
