Jurgen Klopp EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool boss irritated by Ian Abrahams’ question on whether they need to buy another centre-back in January
Jurgen Klopp rubbished suggestions made by talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams that Liverpool may consider signing a new centre-back in January. The German, who spoke to Moose after the Reds’ 2-1 defeat at Wolves in the FA Cup, has something of a defensive selection crisis ahead of their next game against Brighton on Saturday.
4This was Liverpool’s second defeat in as many gamesThis is because Dejan Lovren went off injured early in the game meaning Virgil van Dijk is the only out-and-out Liverpool centre-back who is fully fit. It’s not clear what the extent of Lovren’s injury is but he could join fellow centre-backs Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, who have been out since December, on the treatment table. With this in mind, Moose asked whether Klopp would think about recruiting another centre-back during the January transfer window. And the Reds boss was almost in disbelief at this, saying:The only country that asks a question like this is England. Everything is sorted with buying players.
4Klopp doesn’t believe dipping into the transfer market is the answer for Liverpool’s defensive shortagesWe have four centre-halves. Three, maybe, two-and-a-half are injured so well have to try and come through in the moment. We need them back but you cannot buy a fifth centre-half and say so you play two weeks and after that the others come in.Lovren was replaced by 16-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever, who became the youngest player to represent Liverpool in the FA Cup.Hoever acquitted himself well in the game alongside academy players Curtis Jones, 17, and Rafa Camacho, 18, who started the game.
4Klopp was full of praise for HoeverKlopp added:Ki-Jana was fantastic, hes 16 years old and the other two boys are 18 years old so it was a bit wild.It wasnt a nice game for the young boys. It wasnt like we were 4-0 up but they did the job, especially Ki-Jana coming in.I dont think he [Hoever] expected after not starting the game that he would come on and then, DONG, I have to ask him if hes ready. He did well, it was nice but yeah.”Klopp went on to insist that he did not disrespect the FA Cup by making so many changes. He said: “I’m not sure what you all would have said if our centre-half situation (from the start) was Fabinho and Ki-Jana, probably a few smart people would have told me I don’t respect the competition.“It doesn’t make sense to bring a 16-year-old boy from the start but he came on and did well. I changed a lot because we have to, not because I wanted to.“After the City game we had immediately a few players who were ill with a sore throat. Pretty much all the players who weren’t here today had little problems. “Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson were in our plans. Dejan was not in our plans, he was only supposed to be on the bench.“The intensity of the last few games gave me information it is not possible to start with the three up front.“We have been playing with a similar line-up in some really tough games.”Wolves deserved victory just over two weeks after losing 2-0 to the Reds in the Premier League.Boss Nuno Espirito Santo said of Neves’ long-range strike: “It’s something Ruben does and we encourage him to do. Last season we saw it often and we know he has this talent.
4Ruben Neves strikes from long range to win it for Wolves“It was a very important moment for us and the fans. We’d just lost a goal and to react with such a beautiful goal, Molineux came alive again.“It was a good performance, it was a tough game. We were organised and had good counter-attacks.“In the second half the reaction was important but almost immediately we got back on the front foot so, in general, it was a very good performance.“We go game after game, now we have Manchester City and we’ve done well against them in the past.”
